Coprinus comatus — Shaggy Main — Agaricaceae
“Inky cap” mushroom, named for deliquescing of gills. Small to medium-tall cylindrical cap; white, separating into white-to-brownish scales, turning back with age. Gills crowded, free, white, turning pink, eventually black. White stalk enlarged at base, tapering towards apex, separates from cap. Partial veil, movable ring formed which drops to base.
Habitat: Small groups in disturbed areas, including grass, alongside trails and roads, dung, asphalt edges. Tends to “pop up”.
