Medium-to-large mushroom. Cap orangish to yellowish-brown, white patches, pale near margin; cap flattens with age, margin lined. Ring skirtlike, cream-colored, persistent. Lower base of stalk colored with yellow veil remnants when young. Stalk as tall as cap diameter, thick, bruising brownish. Universal veil, forming fragile volva at base of stalk. Gills free or attached, crowded, white; short gills also present. Mycorrhizal.
