Medium-to-large mushroom. Oval or round cap bright red to bright yellow, cottony warts; cap becomes convex and flattens with age, striate margins; viscid when moist. Warts yellow, fading to white, pale orange. Ring skirtlike, whitish when young, often torn. Stalk broad at base, concentric bands of universal veil on lower stalk, extending upwards, sometimes fragile with age. Gills free or attached, crowded, white. Mycorrhizal.
