Small-to-medium mushroom. Convex cap becoming planar or depressed with age, with incorporated debris, spines beneath. Cap usually single, occasionally fused. New growth whitish, velvety, then darkening to dingy gray or warmer hues from center outward, bruising brown. Short spines whitish when young, brownish with age. Stubby stalk, purplish-blue, dry and velvety. Mycorrhizal with conifers.
Habitat: Solitary or groups, sometimes fused. Coniferous forest, often with spruce.
