Ficus altissima - Council Tree
If you didn’t already feel the distance from a home north of the 45th parallel more than three thousand miles away, the trees of Gifford Arboretum in Coral Gables, Florida, provide a clear reminder. Located in the heart of the sub-tropical world, southern Florida is home to plants that are simply exotic by comparison to almost any other region of the United States. In Florida, you certainly aren’t in oak country anymore and absent, too, are the bright azaleas and tall pines so prevalent in other Eastern and Southern landscapes. Rather, this is a land of short native palms, mangroves, exotic mahoganies, shaving brush trees, and chenille plants. At Gifford, it is possible, within a fairly short sojourn, to encounter a world of plants that is more diverse than you might ever have imagined.
