Hilltop Arboretum

whaet field next to Arboretum
Oaks and Liquidambar at the Pond

In a quiet corner of the Louisiana countryside near Baton Rouge, what began as a postal worker’s passion for nature continues today with the commitment of local citizens. Their dedication to Hilltop Arboretum is apparent as soon as you pass through the gate. To the left, set out in front of the modest home occupied by Emory Smith and his family are tables of plants, grown for selling, just as the previous owner did so many years ago. The purpose now may be more of a practical nature, as the income from plant sales is an important contribution to the ongoing mission of Hilltop. And although associated with a major university, the feeling here is nevertheless one of camaraderie in a group whose work is vital to the continuance of this lovely arboretum.
