View west from the Overlook Trail
The setting alone almost guarantees the beauty of Hoyt Arboretum. Large trees are the rule here, with enough variety to satisfy the most curious or aesthetically inclined. It is a place where strolling becomes an anticipated activity and views vary from the broken and rock-riddled Mount St. Helens, visible on clear days across the expanse of the Columbia River, to rolling hillsides populated with trees and flower-bedecked shrubs. A memorial to those Oregon soldiers fallen in Vietnam is placed within the 187-acre grounds, while a small Coast Redwood forest demonstrates the adaptability of these famous trees. The Coast Redwood grows lustily well north of its California coastal home, as do many other trees in the benign, moist climate of the Pacific Northwest. This is a land where conifers reign while the leafy trees have been given a more humble role in the midst of immense forests.
