'Duchess of Portland' Peony

Bordered by a swift river, and accessible by several paths and old roads, much of Nichols Arboretum is a naturalized landscape composed of native shrubs, herbaceous plants, and trees. The Arboretum is regularly visited by local residents and University students who walk the many trails, sit by the river, play games on the broad lawn of a valley floor, and build fanciful “fairy” and “troll houses” in a wooded setting. Within the context of these activities, there is a peace to the Nichols landscape that entice a person back to its forests and walkways.

As part of a collection of plants that includes the Matthaei Botanical Garden, the motto of Arboretum is “Caring for nature, enriching life.”
