Small to large mushroom. Convex cap, flattened with age or sometimes with a central depression, margin initially inrolled, velvety, brownish-yellow to reddish-brown, aging brown to blackish-brown, sometimes with yellow margin. Gills close, decurrent, paler than cap, whitish aging to tan or yellowish, sometimes with cross-veins. Thick stalk, sometimes off-center, or lateral, whitish at top, velvety dark brown below. Saprophytic.

Habitat: Solitary or groups on conifer stumps, decayed wood, sometimes madrone. Causes brown rot.
