Small to large mushroom. Convex cap with cottony, inrolled margin, maturing to planar or centrally depressed, margin unfurling. Dry, but viscid when moist, matted hairs present when young. Cap brown to dingy reddish or olive, with brown stains. Gills decurrent, pallid to yellowish, becoming dingy, staining when bruised, forked near stalk, sometimes porelike. Stalk, shorter than cap, thick, equal or tapered, sometimes off-centered, dry to finely hairy, colored like cap or somewhat paler. Mycorrhizal.
Habitat: Scattered to gregarious, terrestrial, often near wet habitats, also disturbed sites, parks, lawns, with hardwoods and conifers.
Scent: Not distinctive or mildly fragrant.
Spores: Yellowish-brown
