Small to large mushroom. Convex to fan-shaped cap, aging with central depression, tan to chestnut-brown aging to nearly black. Pores tiny, white maturing to brownish, shallow tubes, attached to decurrent. Stalk shorter than cap diameter, often black although sometimes pale above, equal, sometimes off-center or lateral. Saprophytic.
Habitat: Solitary or small groups, on rotting hardwood or sometimes conifers. Causes white rot.
