Roadside Clearcutting in Stevens Canyon and Beyond
Early in August, we were deeply upset to see that at Mount Rainier the National Park Service had slashed wide swaths of roadside vegetation between the Stevens Creek bridge and Reflection Lakes – far in excess of any roadside mowing we had seen in decades of visiting the Park. Since that day, we have seen this sort of cutting extended into the Nisqually side of the Park.
We were told by a Mount Rainier volunteer that the work was done for the purpose of “viewshed protection.”
We have sent letters of protest and dismay to the US Secretary of the Interior, Sally Jewell, our congressional representative Jim McDermott, and the head of the National Park Service, Jonathan Jarvis. We want to make sure that this mistreatment of the park is not allowed to be repeated and would deeply appreciate your help by signing this petition and telling your friends.
