Small to large mushroom. Convex cap, aging to planar or depressed, viscid when moist, bright red, dark center, fading to pink or orange, often blotched, margin becoming striate. Gills close, attached or free, white to creamy. Stalk equal or broadened at base, longitudinal lines, whitish. Mycorrhizal.
Habitat: Solitary to groups, or troops, terrestrial, coniferous forest, often Douglas-fir.
Scent: Not distinctive, fishy when old
