Convex cap, becoming plane or slightly depressed in center with age, margin grooved, variable colors including whitish to blackish, often purplish, darker at center, viscid when moist, skin separating to 3/4 distance to center. Gills narrow, white, edges sometimes cottony, finely toothed. Stalk equal or broadened at base or apex, white, fragile. Mycorrhizal.
Habitat: Solitary, scattered, or groups, decayed wood or duff, often moss, hardwoods and conifers.
