Medium to large mushroom. Convex to plane cap, often with upturned wavy margin, dry, sometimes cracking, variable colors including olive, gray, rusty-brown hues, often lighter margin, small scales and fibers. Gills attached or notched, spaced, thick, white or tinged with olive or yellow, occasionally stained. Tall stalk, often wider in middle, tapering downward, white or similar to cap with purplish base. Mycorrhizal.
Habitat: Solitary, scattered, groups to troops, terrestrial, conifers, often spruce.
