The redwood grove at UC Davis
Most often encountered near foggy coasts, this giant of a tree can top 300 feet in height and live to an age of 2,000 years. But in the drier climate of California’s Central Valley the Coastal Redwood is planted in conditions quite unlike those of its coastal home. Yet prior to the removal of the majority of the Redwood forests, Redwoods grew in the low mountains northeast of San Francisco, not far from Davis. Planted when the Arboretum was established in the 1930s, a small forest near a stream demonstrates the versatility of the Redwood, for although they may not ever reach great size, they are broad and tall, apparently thriving in a warm valley far from the mists of the Pacific Ocean.
